UTV ventured into movie making with the launch of UMP Plc in 1995-96. Over the time, UMP Plc has emerged as one of the largest movie studios in South Asia. UMP Plc has been a catalyst in corporatising the Indian system of movie making by pioneering the Studio Model. A constant endeavour to deliver quality in terms of cinema has seen movies like India’s official Oscar 2006 entry and BAFTA nominated Rang De Basanti that created new benchmarks across the world, Metro, Hattrick, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Chup Ke Chup Ke, Lakshya, Swades, Fiza, and many more. UMP Plc with the intention of collaborating with the best in the world has entered into strategic Hollywood co-productions with studios like 20thCentury Fox, Sony, Will Smith’s Overbrook. It is the first Indian company to do so. Some international co-productions include Mira Nair’s masterpiece The Namesake, I Think I Love My Wife, starring Chris Rock as an actor and director, (both released in March 2007) and M. Night Shyamalan’s forthcoming The Happening a co-production with 20th Century Fox.
UTV’s movie production is complimented by its strong distribution networks spanning a colossal number of screens across the world. This network endows distribution girth and depth to multilingual movies in global markets like US, UK, Middle East, South Africa, Australia, and Japan. Besides its own productions, movies like Mughal-E-Azam, Parineeta, Bluffmaster, Viruddh, Taxi No. 9211 etc are some of the heavyweights distributed by UMP. Also, UTV’s record-breaking release of Don on 345 screens in 28 countries across the world in 2006, created a new paradigm in terms of promotion, marketing and distribution of mainstream Bollywood movies in the international market.
